There's little doubt that people love going out to eat. In fact, nearly 50% of diners eat out more than once a week and 20% eat out once a week (per On The Line). Fine dining restaurants can be a great choice for eating out, and here are some dos and don'ts for fine dining etiquette.
If you're planning on visiting
fine dining restaurants, make sure to dress nicely. For men, that means wearing at least a jacket and maybe even a suit. For women, that means wearing a suit or a dress.
You don't necessarily have to be dressed to the nines, but you should plan on wearing more than just business casual.
At fining dining restaurants, plan on putting your napkin in your lap while you're eating. If you get up to use the restroom, it should go on the seat of your chair. When you're done eating, place it on the left side of your plate neatly. If you're eating out as part of a business lunch, and you're unsure what to do, look at what your other guests are doing.
This is just a common sense thing at fine dining restaurants. If you're trying to have a romantic dinner with your significant other, this can be very distracting. Keep cell phones in your pocket, on silent, and leave your keys off the table too.
If you're going to have some wine with your meal, don't announce to the waiter what your budget is. Instead, find a wine in your price range and show it to the waiter. They will know how to stay within that price range and, more often than not, you end up with something good. If you don't like the wine, don't return it because the bottle is already open.
Fine dining restaurants can really open your eyes, and your taste buds, to some terrific meals. While there are simple points of etiquette that should be followed, really take time to enjoy your meal. If you're on a date, or perhaps out for an anniversary, enjoy your company and make a point to connect with meaningful conversation.
